The concept of Community Growth Areas (CGAs) was introduced in the 2006 update of the Glasgow and Clyde Valley Joint Structure Plan.
It is intended to address projected shortfalls in housing land over the next decade and beyond. This is a long-term approach to development planning which looks beyond current economic circumstances to provide a sustainable approach to meeting Glasgow's housing needs, particularly for owner-occupied family housing.
The addition of community growth housing land in Glasgow to the existing and projected housing land supply will not significantly reduce Glasgow's continued focus on previously developed sites. More than 90% of new housing developed in the city over the next decade will be on brownfield land.
The community growth concept is aimed at expanding the city's suburbs in a manner which retains environmentally important areas and which links new residential areas into the existing urban fabric. It is intended that the new residential areas will be developed in a sustainable manner, have good access to public transport, use existing town centre facilities and also provide additional facilities for the use of new and existing residents.
The three community growth areas within Glasgow are:
Robroyston / Millerston
Easterhouse / Gartloch
Broomhouse / Baillieston / Carmyle
