  2014 Commonwealth Games

2014 Commonwealth Games

Hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games will mean much more for Glasgow than a brief increase in profile and revenue. As part of a wider regeneration programme, the event will be of lasting benefit to the city.

It is estimated that over £500m will be invested in the city’s venues and infrastructure as a direct result of the Games − leaving a legacy that will prove to be of greater value to the city.

  • A legacy of new and renovated sporting facilities in and around Glasgow
  • A catalyst for improved housing, transport and the environment
  • Over £500m of investment in associated venues and new-build infrastructure, including:
    • £245m Athletes Village
    • £125m Scottish National Arena
    • £120m National Indoor Sports Arena & Velodrome
    • £2m Hockey Centre
    • £21m revamp of Hampden Park
    • £45m improvements to existing sports arenas

Many ongoing regeneration schemes will benefit greatly from the Games. A prime example is the £2bn Clyde Gateway project, which began in 2004 and will continue until 2029. The project aims to regenerate a significant area of Glasgow’s East End, building more than 10,000 new housing units, 400,000 square metres of commercial property and 50,000 square metres of retail space.

The prestigious Games Village in the Clyde Gateway regeneration area has been designed with the help of Commonwealth athletes, creating a new community on the banks of the River Clyde. It will be twice the size of the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games Village, giving the athletes space to stretch out, meet new people and make use of the on-site training facilities.

The development of the new National Indoor Sports Arena, National Velodrome and National Hockey Centre - all in close proximity to the Athletes’ Village − are three other cornerstones of the Games proposal. After the Games, each venue will be large enough to regularly host major championships and also serve as sustainable community facilities.

Another significant Games project is The Scottish National Arena. This brand new venue, on the site of the Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre (SECC), will host gymnastics and the netball finals during the Games. Designed by world-renowned architect, Sir Norman Foster, this new arena will provide Incredible sight lines, an electric atmosphere and world class facilities. It will be one of the most important new buildings in Scotland and, with 12,000 seats, one of the largest indoor venues in the UK.
